Staff Supper and Heart & Soul Cookbook

The Staff Supper and Heart & Soul Cookbook project was a partnership between RDBID and RWBID.

Its goal was to support food and beverage establishments and their employees who had been laid off due to the closure and were experiencing financial and emotional hardship due to COVID 19. This program ran for seven weeks during Saskatchewan’s government forced closure (April through June 2020).

Staff Supper provided a small light in the COVID storm and presented an opportunity for F &B employees to virtually gather (via Zoom) for a meal and camaraderie. Employees would order a subsidized meal and beverage from a selected Downtown or Warehouse restaurant for pick up or delivery. The meal cost was subsidized by RDBID/RWBID. Rebellion Brewing, a local craft brewery, provided a complimentary beverage for each meal order. Participants would then join a Zoom call to eat their supper and socialize with colleagues in the industry. Nine restaurants from the two BIDs provided food and beverages for the program. Over seventy employees participated, and more than three hundred meals were served through the Staff Supper Program.

At the conclusion of the program, we wanted to tell the story of this well received program and celebrate the restaurants and breweries that participated. The organizers, chefs and business owners were asked to provide their thoughts on the pandemic and how they and their business adapted, as well as a recipe or two. The result was Heart & Soul, Recipes and Reflections from Staff Supper. This professionally produced 40-page ‘cookbook-let’ includes information on the restaurants, their reflections on the pandemic closure, over a dozen recipes and beautiful photographs. It is now being distributed in hard copy and as a downloadable PDF. It is available for free, however, we are encouraging recipients to donate to the Regina Food Bank.
