Overview: Join this session and learn how three different organizations are incubating businesses in a pop-up environment to create immediate buzz and interest, potentially leading to long-term tenants in their district. First you will learn how one organization leveraged the districts available space to lure in burgeoning locals and international mega brands, health and wellness providers, cultural organizations and emerging culinary entrepreneurs, through a newly realized, expansive pop-up program. Next, you will learn about another pop-up program offering space and wrap-around technical assistance to innovative retailers, restaurants, entrepreneurs, makers and creatives in fashion, design, technology, food, the arts, wellness and more. And in the final presentation you will learn about a program that started in 2018 and was developed around partnerships with property owners and corporate and philanthropic sponsors to attract BIPOC business startups.

- Understand the importance of having agreements between property owners, potential business owners and your organization.
- Discover strategies for activating vacant ground floor space and collaborating with your small and local business community.

Dan Collison
Director of Downtown Partnerships, Minneapolis Downtown Council
Dan Collison is Director of Downtown Partnerships for the Minneapolis Downtown Council, the Executive Director of the East Town Business Partnership and NūLoop Partners, and Lead Pastor at First Covenant Church, Minneapolis. Collison spends most of his days bringing people together across sectors through inter-disciplinary work for the explicit purpose of promoting human flourishing and building diverse communities. As a civic leader, he has been instrumental in providing strategic leadership for the East Town Business Partnership and the NūLoop Partners amidst unprecedented redevelopment, catalyzing new business growth and forging new strategic collaborations between business leaders, civic leaders, and the residential communities of the East Town and North Loop districts.
Karyn Miller
Director of Planning, Art, and Activation, Golden Triangle BID
Karyn Miller serves as the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District’s (BID) Director of Planning, Art, and Activation. Karyn leads the BID’s urban planning, creative place-keeping, public art, and design projects in DC’s central business district. Karyn previously served as Arlington Art Center’s Curator and Director of Exhibitions, conceiving of and delivering a year-round exhibition schedule and public art program. Prior to that, Karyn spent more than a decade building relationships with the region’s artists and arts community. At CulturalDC, Karyn curated art installations in vacant retail spaces, developed arts space projects with the real estate community, and organized a series of installations at Martin Luther King, Jr Memorial Library.
Timothy F. Schmand
Executive Director, Lincoln Road Business Improvement District
Since October of 2017, Timothy F. Schmand has served as the Executive Director of the Lincoln Road Business Improvement District, which was created to stabilize and improve the Lincoln Road retail business district through promotion, management, marketing. He brings 34 years of placemaking management experience to Lincoln Road. Prior to Lincoln Road, Schmand worked with the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District, the Bayfront Park Management Trust and the Historical Museum of Southern Florida. Mr. Schmand is an award-winning author whose fiction has appeared in both popular and literary journals and he is also a certified yoga instructor.
