Overview: Streets can be one of the biggest underutilized assets for any downtown. Whether you are interested in creating new public space using the roadway or activating existing pedestrian areas, street murals are one of the highest impact and lowest cost approaches. Besides beautifying a neighborhood with color, they also celebrate the arts, communicate narratives of change and present a remarkable opportunity for public engagement. Learn more about the what, why, and how from a BID executive, an artist and a tactical urbanism expert.

Brad Carney
Artist & Creator, Brad Carney Studios LLC
Brad Carney has created works for the community-based public for over twenty years. His aesthetic emphasizes rhythm, motion and playfulness with a line, color, and composition. Each project can create powerful human connections. Brad has worked as a teaching artist and internship coordinator for Mural Arts Philadelphia, the world’s largest creative public art program, and has witnessed the power of public art to foster deep relationships in the communities they serve. His recent murals have been inspired by abstract interpretations of sound and movement in our environment, neighborhood architectural transition, and the cultural identity of communities. He feels the artwork reflects our history, discusses our present, and reimagines a future, together.
Tony Garcia
Principal, Street Plans
Tony Garcia, is co-founder of Street Plans Collaborative and leads the firm’s Miami office. Tony is a co-author of the globally acclaimed series Tactical Urbanism: Short-Term Action, Long-Term Change, co-author of the Tactical Urbanism book, published by Island Press in March 2015, and together with Mike Lydon is the recipient of the 2017 Seaside Prize. Tony is a registered architect, a former part-time faculty member at the University of Miami School of Architecture, and most recently was a co-author of both the Bloomberg Asphalt Art Guide, a document that lays out how cities can use art to reclaim road space as public space, and NACTO's Streets for Pandemic Response and Recovery.
Ed Janoff
Deputy Director, Union Square Partnership
Ed Janoff is Deputy Director & Chief of Staff of Union Square Partnership and an expert in park and streetscape planning in New York City. Prior to joining Union Square, Ed held positions at NYC DOT, NYC Parks, and Bryant Park Corporation/34th Street Partnership among others. He has orchestrated many dozens of projects and programs developing and managing signature pedestrian and public space improvements citywide including parks, plazas, StreetSeats, open streets, and more.
