Innovative Projects

Garage Racing National Championships

As the only event of its kind in the United States, the Garage Racing National Championships reimagines everyday infrastructure as a platform for innovation, placemaking and community engagement. The project was created to advance three primary goals: (1) reinforce National Landing’s commitment to bicycle accessibility and multimodal transportation; (2) creatively activate underutilized space to shift perceptions of urban infrastructure and commercial offices; and (3) generate local and national visibility that strengthens National Landing’s identity as a forward-thinking, innovative downtown district.

The event targets multiple audiences, including competitive cyclists from across the country, local cycling enthusiasts, residents, employees, families and visitors. By combining elite competition with an inclusive, festival-style atmosphere, Garage Racing attracts both serious racers and casual spectators, broadening participation and community impact. The inclusion of youth categories opens the event to families and encourages the next generation of cyclists.

Key components include a professionally designed racecourse inspired by cyclocross that spans two levels of the garage drawing national athletes and novice racers. Spectator viewing areas showcase local businesses, vendors and activities, brand partnerships, food and beverage offerings along with branded placemaking elements. An integrated marketing campaign has consistently generated widespread local and national media attention. More than a race, Garage Racing is a strategic demonstration of how parking infrastructure and mobility priorities can coexist. By highlighting bicycle culture inside a parking facility, the event underscores both the ease of parking in National Landing and the district’s broader commitment to innovative, multimodal urban design.
