Public Space Management and Operations
Operations of a place requires the daily management of the physical space, whether publicly or privately owned, that encompasses cleaning, beautification, wayfinding, infrastructure maintenance, outreach, green space, and parking. Place managers address both the actual and perceived safety and security issues of a place by providing services, outreach and facilities. Place managers foster relationships with local and regional providers to share resources and information with the goal of cultivating safe and vibrant communities. Clean and safe teams have evolved within some districts to include engagement and intervention for those in need within our urban places.
Key to Change / Community Intervention Team
At a 2015 homelessness symposium, Milwaukee County announced a commitment to the
Housing First model and Milwaukee Downtownâs pledged support. Milwaukee Downtown has since supported Milwaukee County Housing Division and its local Housing First model through its Key to Change campaign. The fundraising effort includes rallying financial support from Downtown organizations, the business community and philanthropic organizations, as well as the general
public.

Generational Ties at Old Bakery Park
The Old Bakery is a historically landmarked building in downtown Austin. The proposal of a mural on this building provided a challenging canvas, as installation on a historic structure required careful considerations and approvals. Additionally, the mural design needed to enhance the cultural, historic and creative impact of the buildingâs use, its architectural features and its place within the Congress National Register Historic District.

Ogilvy Square – Construction Mitigation Mural
When continual delays to street repair threatened to impede business foot traffic into the busy summer patio season, the BIA established two priorities in response. First, Advocate on behalf of restaurants to ensure patios could remain operational and ensure that Ogilvy Square was attractive to visitors. Second, the Downtown Rideau BIA commissioned a mural to transform the unsightly temporary asphalt into a vibrant art piece.

301 Congress Avenue Porch
In 2021, HPI Management and the Downtown Austin Alliance Foundation (DAA-Foundation) reimagined âThe Porchâ at 301 Congress, a previously underutilized pocket park in the heart of downtown. Community input guided the visioning of an interactive, accessible space, with other key goals for the space determined by community engagement.

Coliseum Central Sensory Activation Vehicle Initiative
Many individuals with invisible disabilities and sensory impairments are often excluded from festivals and events due to lack of accommodation. This exclusion prevents these individuals and their families from enjoying these community gatherings. To address this issue, Coliseum Central sought to purchase a branded Sensory Activation Vehicle (SAV) to create a more inclusive environment at such events.

Adams Morgan Pizza Box Trashcans
For years, Adams Morganâs renowned late-night food scene presented a persistent sanitation challenge: Overflowing piles of discarded pizza boxes. Recognizing that conventional bins were ill-suited for the large, flat shape of pizza boxes, leading to constant overflow, the BID adopted a proactive approach: the Pizza Box Trash Can Initiative.
