AI is everywhere now – maps predict where you are going next, email platforms suggest responses, and you can make an image of anything instantly. The AI for UPMOs Top Issues Council explored how, as urban place management professionals, we have the opportunity to leverage AI to increase our impact, the efficiency of our organizations and transform our downtowns and city centers. At the same time, we need to have conversations internally and amongst ourselves about the challenges and potential pitfalls.
Here are a few of the most innovative use cases for AI I’ve seen from conversations with colleagues:
- Taking 50+ pages of city ordinances and process and having AI create a one sheet for stakeholders.
- Developing a conflict mediation plan to help mitigate a conflict between the UPMO, City and partners.
- Using motion sensors and image verification to manage a dock from seagulls overtaking the area.
At the DTLA Alliance, we used AI to transform a 4-6 month renaming process into a 1-2 month process by using AI to provide feedback on the potential names and serve as focus group and survey results of sorts.
It’s highly likely that AI is already being used within our organizations. In fact, we have heard from staff across the country that while they are using it, they aren’t sure if it’s something leadership approves of. Globally, 75% of knowledge workers are using AI. Opening up the conversation with staff internally, and then with board members, organizations can align their mission, values and goals with the capabilities of AI. Some guiding questions could include:
- How can AI be leveraged to enhance our capacity?
- What are things we should consider when using AI as a team?
- Any best practices you’ve heard of or want to share?
We should match the spirit of experimentation and innovation within our organizations with our approach to using AI to enhance the impact we make every day in our districts.
