Healthier & Safer Communities for All

KATE FENSKE
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG BIZ
CHAIR, IDA CANADA

IDA Canada hit our nation’s capital this month to advocate for greater federal support for downtowns and main streets across the country. During the second annual Advocacy Day on Parliament Hill, more than 20 IDA members from 15 major cities met with parliamentarians to push for increased investment and support.

The day kicked off with a press conference that garnered national media attention, reaching over 160 million impressions. Our calls to action resonated with residents and businesses nationwide and the key message through all our conversations was collaboration is key.

Advocacy priorities presented included the need for federal funding to address homelessness, mental health and addictions to ensure safer, more inclusive downtowns. We advocated for dedicated funding to help increase housing density and incentivize residential and commercial development by working in partnership with municipal and provincial governments. We also urged legislative reforms and a systematic review of the bail system to enhance public safety. We know what’s happening right now isn’t working.

I had the opportunity to discuss these pressing issues on CBC’s Canada Tonight and explore ways we can create healthier, safer communities for all. Our IDA Canada Leadership Group would like to thank all the IDA members who joined us in Ottawa and to those who have contributed financially to support our advocacy efforts.
