Seattle On My Mind

The IDA Annual Conference & Marketplace in Seattle was a resounding success, leaving attendees energized, connected and equipped with new ideas to revitalize their downtowns and commercial districts.

One of the most consistent themes that emerged from social media was the conference’s inspiring atmosphere. Attendees were moved by the Master Talk speakers, breakout sessions and networking opportunities, and raved about the interactive sessions, competitive challenges and overall enjoyable atmosphere. These elements added a unique and memorable dimension to the event. The event fostered a sense of community and shared purpose among industry professionals.

Amy King’s Master Talk remains top of mind for me, typifying the impact community focused business development can have on society. Her company, Pallet, builds tiny homes for our unhoused neighbors with a workforce specially trained by Pallet. The company’s home builders are often formerly incarcerated individuals trained by Pallet in the construction trades. But more importantly Amy illustrated how compassionate leadership can help break the cycle of crime while helping to address the housing crisis.

The conference also served as a powerful platform for networking. Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for downtown revitalization. These connections lead to collaborations, partnerships and shared knowledge attendees know will benefit their districts across the globe.

Through a growing number of specialty network events at the conference, these professional practice communities are where attendees “find their people.”  The importance of these networks was so profound we realized peer group gatherings and forums need to be held at the very beginning of the conference so connections can be made early and carried throughout the subsequent days.

For first-time attendees, who do meet early at a specialty gathering, the conference was a revelation. They described their experience as insightful and informative, and many expressed a desire to attend future events. The conference’s welcoming atmosphere and engaging content made a lasting impression on newcomers who numbered well over 330 this year.

Whether new or a veteran attendee, the conference wasn’t just about learning – it was also about having fun, and the city of Seattle made it easy! The conference proved to be a transformative experience for many – an experience we will all lean on throughout the year ahead (and you better believe, will be made even greater in Washington, DC next year).
